Biographie
Jean Le Grec est un peintre franco-suisse né en 1935 à Genève, en Suisse. Il s’installe en France dans les années 1950, notamment à Cannes, où il développe l’essentiel de sa carrière artistique. Rattaché à la Jeune Peinture et à l’esprit de l’École de Paris, il s’inscrit dans un courant figuratif expressif, à rebours des grandes tendances de l’abstraction alors dominantes dans l’art d’après-guerre.
Son œuvre se caractérise par une grande sensibilité à la lumière et aux couleurs du sud, qu’il capte avec une intensité vibrante dans ses marines, ses scènes de village, ses paysages provençaux et ses natures mortes. À travers une matière généreuse, une touche vivante et une palette solaire, il parvient à restituer l’atmosphère des lieux qu’il peint avec une authenticité touchante. La Méditerranée, ses barques, ses marchés et ses personnages modestes nourrissent un univers pictural chaleureux, populaire et profondément humain.
Jean Le Grec a exposé régulièrement dans les années 1960 à 1980, notamment à Paris et à Rome, où il a bénéficié d’une rétrospective de son vivant. Il a également été représenté par la Galerie Katia Granoff, haut lieu de la scène artistique figurative de l’époque. Malgré son relatif effacement des grandes scènes institutionnelles, son travail a été reconnu par de nombreux collectionneurs et amateurs d’art soucieux de préserver une figuration sincère, enracinée dans le quotidien.
Il s’éteint prématurément en 1990, laissant derrière lui une œuvre riche et authentique, aujourd’hui redécouverte avec un regain d’intérêt pour les artistes indépendants de la Jeune Peinture. Jean Le Grec appartient à cette génération d’artistes attachés à un regard personnel sur le monde, où la beauté du réel — même simple — devient sujet de création.
Biography
Jean Le Grec is a Franco-Swiss painter born in 1935 in Geneva, Switzerland. He settled in France in the 1950s, notably in Cannes, where he developed most of his artistic career. A member of the Jeune Peinture movement and the spirit of the École de Paris, he is part of an expressive figurative movement, counter to the major abstract trends then dominant in post-war art.
His work is characterized by a great sensitivity to the light and colors of the south, which he captures with vibrant intensity in his seascapes, village scenes, Provençal landscapes, and still lifes. Through generous materials, a lively touch, and a sunny palette, he succeeds in capturing the atmosphere of the places he paints with touching authenticity. The Mediterranean, its boats, its markets, and its humble characters nourish a warm, popular, and profoundly human pictorial universe.
Jean Le Grec exhibited regularly from the 1960s to the 1980s, notably in Paris and Rome, where he was the subject of a retrospective during his lifetime. He was also represented by the Katia Granoff Gallery, a leading center of the figurative art scene at the time. Despite his relative disappearance from major institutional venues, his work was recognized by many collectors and art lovers keen to preserve a sincere figurative style rooted in everyday life.
He died prematurely in 1990, leaving behind a rich and authentic body of work, now being rediscovered with a renewed interest in the independent artists of the Young Painting movement. Jean Le Grec belongs to that generation of artists committed to a personal perspective on the world, where the beauty of reality—even simple reality—become the subject of creation.
