Biographie

Jean-Pierre Capron, né le 4 août 1921 à Cannes, débute des études d'architecture qu’il abandonne rapidement pour se consacrer entièrement à la peinture. Après la Seconde Guerre mondiale, il entre à l'École nationale des Beaux-Arts où il côtoie notamment Bernard Buffet. En 1950, il expose pour la première fois à Paris, à la galerie Visconti, où le conservateur du Musée d’Art Moderne de Paris, Jean Cassou, acquiert une de ses œuvres. Lauréat du prix Conte-Carrière en 1951, il est sélectionné l’année suivante pour le prix de la Critique et celui de la Jeune Peinture. Dès lors, Capron expose régulièrement à Paris (galeries Drouant-David puis Drouant) et participe à de nombreuses expositions internationales.

Sa carrière américaine débute en 1961 à la galerie Pomeroy à San Francisco, suivie de présentations à Chicago (1965) et New York (1966). Dès 1968, ses œuvres circulent entre la France, les États-Unis et le Japon, où il expose à la galerie Nichido, puis à la galerie Taménaga. En 1970, il rejoint à nouveau la galerie Maurice Garnier aux côtés de peintres comme Buffet, Jansem ou Michel de Gallard, et participe aux grandes expositions collectives de la galerie.

Ses voyages et expositions se poursuivent à New York, Houston, Montréal (galerie Martal) et Chicago, où la galerie Wally Findlay le représente dès 1979. Capron réalise également plusieurs lithographies pour Vision Nouvelle, et rejoint en 1985 la galerie Guigné à Paris. Il expose ensuite à la galerie Hénot à Enghien-les-Bains (1993) et La Rochelle (1996). Il décède en juillet 1997, laissant une œuvre marquée par une atmosphère mélancolique et une vision singulière des paysages urbains et silencieux.

Biography

Jean-Pierre Capron, born on August 4, 1921, in Cannes, began studying architecture, which he quickly abandoned to devote himself entirely to painting. After the Second World War, he entered the École nationale des Beaux-Arts, where he worked with Bernard Buffet. In 1950, he exhibited for the first time in Paris at the Galerie Visconti, where the curator of the Musée d'Art Moderne de Paris, Jean Cassou, acquired one of his works. Winner of the Prix Conte-Carrière in 1951, he was selected the following year for the Prix de la Critique and the Prix de la Jeune Peinture. From then on, Capron exhibited regularly in Paris (at the Drouant-David and then Drouant galleries) and participated in numerous international exhibitions.

His American career began in 1961 at the Pomeroy Gallery in San Francisco, followed by presentations in Chicago (1965) and New York (1966). Since 1968, his works have traveled between France, the United States, and Japan, where he has exhibited at the Nichido Gallery, then at the Taménaga Gallery. In 1970, he returned to the Maurice Garnier Gallery alongside painters such as Buffet, Jansem, and Michel de Gallard, and participated in the gallery's major group exhibitions.

His travels and exhibitions continued in New York, Houston, Montreal (Martal Gallery), and Chicago, where he was represented by the Wally Findlay Gallery in 1979. Capron also produced several lithographs for Vision Nouvelle, and in 1985 joined the Guigné Gallery in Paris. He subsequently exhibited at the Hénot Gallery in Enghien-les-Bains (1993) and La Rochelle (1996). He died in July 1997, leaving behind a body of work marked by a melancholic atmosphere and a singular vision of silent urban landscapes.
