Son œuvre se distingue par une quête de la construction formelle et un engagement intellectuel profond, oscillant entre abstraction et figuration tout au long de sa carrière.
Jeunesse et formation
Jean Hélion naît le 5 avril 1904 à Couterne, dans l’Orne. Après des études à l’École des beaux-arts de Paris, il devient un jeune peintre prometteur, influencé par le cubisme et les formes géométriques. Très tôt, il se lie avec des artistes du mouvement de l’avant-garde, s'installant à Paris dans le quartier Montparnasse, centre névralgique de la scène artistique de l'époque.
Abstraction et changement
Dans les années 1930, Hélion adopte un style purement abstrait, s’éloignant des conventions traditionnelles de la peinture figurative.
