Biography

Jean BRÉANT (born October 16, 1922 in Fécamp, Seine-Maritime; died April 13, 1984 in Le Havre) was a French painter associated with the Rouen School.

Trained at the École des Beaux-Arts in Rouen, he was a student of Robert Pinchon, a leading figure in Norman Impressionism. This training undoubtedly influenced his early artistic career.

Bréant is known for his landscapes of Normandy, particularly those of the Le Havre region and the Seine estuary. He also painted still lifes, portraits, and genre scenes. His style evolved from a Post-Impressionist style, marked by a visible brushstroke and attention to light, toward a more personal expression in which color and the simplification of forms took on increasing importance.

He exhibited regularly in the Rouen and Le Havre regions, contributing to the local artistic vitality. His work demonstrates a deep attachment to his native region and a sensitivity to the beauty of its landscapes and its unique light.

Although he did not achieve the international renown of some of his contemporaries, Jean Bréant remains a respected figure in 20th-century Norman painting, whose works are appreciated for their sincerity and sensitive interpretation of the local landscape.
