Biographie

Damien François (1906, Courbevoie – 1967, Paris) est un peintre français dont le parcours artistique traverse les grandes mutations de la peinture moderne du XXe siècle. Formé dans le contexte riche et exigeant de l’entre-deux-guerres, il s’inscrit d’abord dans la mouvance figurative de l’École de Paris des années 1930, courant cosmopolite et nourri par une sensibilité post-impressionniste, expressionniste et parfois symboliste.

Son œuvre prend un tournant décisif après la Seconde Guerre mondiale, lorsqu’il se détourne de la figuration pour embrasser les principes d’une abstraction lyrique flamboyante, empreinte de liberté gestuelle, de puissance chromatique et d’élan émotionnel. Sa peinture devient alors le terrain d’une recherche intérieure où le souffle du geste se conjugue à la matière et à la lumière, dans une quête d’expression pure.

Damien François expose régulièrement dans les années 1950 et 60, notamment aux côtés de Lucienne Olivieri, autre figure sensible de cette abstraction française d’après-guerre. Damien François (1906, Courbevoie – 1967, Paris) is a French painter whose artistic career spans the major transformations of 20th-century modern painting. Trained in the rich and demanding context of the interwar period, he initially joined the figurative movement of the Paris School of the 1930s, a cosmopolitan movement informed by post-Impressionist, Expressionist, and sometimes Symbolist sensibilities.

His work took a decisive turn after the Second World War, when he turned away from figuration to embrace the principles of a flamboyant, lyrical abstraction, imbued with gestural freedom, chromatic power, and emotional impetus. His painting then became the terrain of an inner quest where the breath of gesture combines with matter and light, in a quest for pure expression.

Damien François exhibited regularly in the 1950s and 1960s, notably alongside Lucienne Olivieri, another prominent figure in post-war French abstraction. Alongside his work as a painter, he taught at the Beaux-Arts in Paris, where he taught his students a passionate approach to creation, combining technical rigor with an openness to modernity.
