Biographie
Max Papart (1911–1994) était un peintre, graveur et collagiste français, connu pour son style post-cubiste coloré mêlant abstraction, figuration et poésie visuelle.
Formation et débuts
Né à Marseille en 1911, Max Papart est initié très jeune à l'art par son père, peintre amateur. Après un passage à l'École des Beaux-Arts de Marseille, il poursuit sa formation de manière autodidacte. Il s’installe à Paris en 1936, travaille comme imprimeur et commence à exposer au Salon des Indépendants.
Œuvre et évolution artistique
Son style s’inspire du cubisme, qu’il réinterprète avec une touche personnelle mêlant géométrie, collages, textures et couleurs vives. Il utilise différentes techniques, notamment la gravure au carborundum et la lithographie, et crée des œuvres riches en symboles, souvent empreintes d’humour et de poésie. Ses thématiques récurrentes incluent les figures humaines, les oiseaux, les paysages, la musique et le cirque.
Carrière et reconnaissance
À partir des années 1950, il expose en Europe, aux États-Unis et au Japon. Il illustre aussi des livres d’artistes, particulièrement ceux de Jacques Prévert et André Verdet. De 1969 à 1973, il enseigne la gravure à l’Université Paris-VIII. En 1981, il part aux États-Unis où son œuvre est largement diffusée grâce à la galerie Ken Nahan.
Fin de vie et héritage
Promu officier des Arts et des Lettres, Max Papart décède à Paris en 1994. Son œuvre, d'une grande richesse formelle, reste célébrée pour sa liberté, son inventivité et son équilibre entre tradition et modernité.

Max Papart (1911–1994) was a French painter, printmaker, and collagist known for his colorful post-Cubist style blending abstraction, figuration, and visual poetry.
Education and Early Life
Born in Marseille in 1911, Max Papart was introduced to art at a very young age by his father, an amateur painter. After studying at the École des Beaux-Arts in Marseille, he continued his training as an autodidact. He moved to Paris in 1936, worked as a printer, and began exhibiting at the Salon des Indépendants.
Work and Artistic Development
His style was inspired by Cubism, which he reinterpreted with a personal touch, combining geometry, collage, textures, and vibrant colors. He used a variety of techniques, including carborundum etching and lithography, and created works rich in symbolism, often imbued with humor and poetry. His recurring themes include human figures, birds, landscapes, music, and the circus.
Career and Recognition
Beginning in the 1950s, he exhibited in Europe, the United States, and Japan. He also illustrated artists' books, notably those by Jacques Prévert and André Verdet. From 1969 to 1973, he taught engraving at the University of Paris-VIII. In 1981, he moved to the United States, where his work was widely distributed thanks to the Ken Nahan Gallery.
Later Life and Legacy
Promoted to Officer of Arts and Letters, Max Papart died in Paris in 1994. His work, of great formal richness, remains celebrated for its freedom, inventiveness, and balance between tradition and modernity.
