Biographie
André Marchand (1907-1997) est un peintre français d'une grande richesse créative et d'une personnalité marquée par l'indépendance et la passion pour la nature. Né à Paris dans une famille d'artistes, il perd sa mère à l'âge de onze ans, un événement tragique qui marquera profondément son existence. Son père, professeur de mathématiques, l'élève dans un environnement intellectuel, mais c’est dans l’ombre de cette perte qu’il trouve la force de s'adonner à la peinture dès l’adolescence. À quatorze ans, il commence à peindre et choisit la Montagne Sainte-Victoire comme modèle pour ses premières aquarelles. Ce paysage, caractéristique de la Provence, deviendra l'un de ses motifs récurrents.
En 1926, André Marchand quitte Aix-en-Provence, où il fait ses études secondaires, et part pour Paris, rompu à la discipline stricte de son père. À Paris, il ne connaît personne et traverse une période difficile. Afin de subvenir à ses besoins, il travaille comme manœuvre dans une entreprise de bâtiment, loin des salles de l’École des Beaux-Arts. Toutefois, il passe de nombreuses heures au Musée du Louvre, se familiarisant avec les chefs-d’œuvre de la peinture classique et moderne, ce qui nourrit son travail et affine ses aspirations artistiques. Il rencontre également plusieurs artistes et intellectuels durant ces années, dont Darius Milhaud, avec qui il renouera plus tard, ainsi que Francis Gruber et Pierre Tal Coat. Ces rencontres seront décisives dans son parcours artistique.
En 1932, André Marchand commence à exposer au Salon d'Automne, puis au Salon des Indépendants. Il se fait connaître par son association avec le groupe « Forces Nouvelles », un mouvement de jeunes artistes engagés, et il commence à développer une peinture marquée par une grande simplicité formelle et une recherche de l'âme des choses. En 1933, il fait un voyage marquant à Biskra, en Algérie, un lieu aux portes du désert qui laissera une empreinte profonde dans sa peinture. Cet épisode le pousse à peindre pendant plusieurs années sur les bords de la Méditerranée, notamment à Toulon, Hyères et Saint-Rémy-de-Provence.

La guerre et le Front Populaire modifient le cours de sa carrière. André Marchand est mobilisé en 1939 et affecté à un poste en Champagne au Quartier Général du général Gamelin. En 1940, alors que la guerre prend une tournure dramatique, il traverse la France à pied et échappe de justesse à une mort certaine lorsqu'il est mitraillé par des chasseurs bombardiers. Ce périple traumatisant laisse une empreinte durable sur l'artiste, et la couleur commence à envahir progressivement sa palette. Il peint un ciel rouge vif, compensé par la présence de trois grandes Parques noires, comme un hommage à cette violence qu’il vient de vivre. Son ami Georges Braque saluera d'ailleurs cette recherche intense de la lumière, la qualifiant de « sens de la lumière noire ».
En 1937, André Marchand reçoit le prix Paul Guillaume pour son œuvre La jeune fille et le paralytique, une peinture qui s'inscrit dans une série monochrome où il décrit des personnages hiératiques, comme figés dans des paysages désertiques, dans une atmosphère proche de la peinture métaphysique de Giorgio de Chirico. Ces œuvres sont remarquées et permettent à Marchand de se faire un nom. En 1941, il participe à l'exposition Vingt jeunes peintres de tradition française organisée à Paris par Jean Bazaine et la galerie Bernheim-Jeune. Cette exposition marque une étape importante dans la reconnaissance de son travail.
Dès la fin de la guerre, André Marchand s'installe définitivement à Paris, où il fait partie des fondateurs du Salon de Mai en 1945. En 1942, il participe à une exposition individuelle chez Louis Carré, et en 1944, le galeriste Aimé Maeght lui propose un atelier à Vence, où il peint de nombreuses œuvres sur la nature et le paysage méditerranéen. En 1946, il devient l'un des premiers artistes à exposer dans la galerie d'Aimé Maeght, où ses Arlésiennes rencontrent un grand succès. Bien que ses premières œuvres soient marquées par un éclairage méditerranéen intense, ses recherches artistiques évoluent et, à partir de 1946, il s'installe en Bourgogne, où il commence à peindre une végétation plus dense et plus intime, explorant des nuances de lumière plus subtiles et des motifs végétaux.
Marchand se distingue par son approche singulière de la peinture : ses recherches formelles et sa quête de lumière l’amènent à explorer différents styles au fil des années, allant de la figuration pure à l’abstraction. Dans les années 1950, il commence à expérimenter la peinture semi-abstraite, notamment pour rendre les forces de la nature, comme le Mistral en Provence ou les mouvements de la mer. Il travaille aussi sur une série de « vies silencieuses » — des natures mortes où il joue avec la lumière, les ombres et les formes géométriques.
À partir des années 1950, son œuvre connaît un grand succès international, et André Marchand expose dans de nombreuses galeries à travers le monde, de l’Europe aux États-Unis, du Japon à l’Amérique Latine. Toutefois, cet essor ne le mène pas à la célébrité médiatique. En effet, Marchand est un artiste solitaire, qui préfère se consacrer entièrement à son travail sans se soucier des exigences du marché de l'art. Il refuse d’être professeur aux Beaux-Arts, refuse la Légion d’honneur et refuse de se soumettre à l’esprit du temps. Il fuit le contact avec les admirateurs et refuse de céder à la pression des galeries.

Biography
André Marchand (1907-1997) was a French painter of great creative potential and a personality marked by independence and a passion for nature. Born in Paris into a family of artists, he lost his mother at the age of eleven, a tragic event that would profoundly impact his life. His father, a mathematics teacher, raised him in an intellectual environment, but it was in the shadow of this loss that he found the strength to devote himself to painting as a teenager. At fourteen, he began painting and chose the Montagne Sainte-Victoire as the model for his first watercolors. This landscape, characteristic of Provence, would become one of his recurring motifs.
In 1926, André Marchand left Aix-en-Provence, where he attended secondary school, for Paris, accustomed to his father's strict discipline. In Paris, he knew no one and went through a difficult time. To support himself, he worked as a laborer in a construction company, far from the halls of the École des Beaux-Arts. However, he spent many hours at the Louvre Museum, familiarizing himself with the masterpieces of classical and modern painting, which nourished his work and refined his artistic aspirations. He also met several artists and intellectuals during these years, including Darius Milhaud, with whom he would later reconnect, as well as Francis Gruber and Pierre Tal Coat. These encounters would prove decisive in his artistic career.
In 1932, André Marchand began exhibiting at the Salon d'Automne, then at the Salon des Indépendants. He became known for his association with the "Forces Nouvelles" group, a movement of young, committed artists, and he began to develop a style of painting marked by great formal simplicity and a search for the soul of things. In 1933, he made a memorable trip to Biskra, Algeria, a place on the edge of the desert that would leave a deep imprint on his work. This episode led him to paint for several years on the shores of the Mediterranean, notably in Toulon, Hyères and Saint-Rémy-de-Provence.

The war and the Popular Front changed the course of his career. André Marchand was drafted in 1939 and assigned to a post in Champagne at General Gamelin's headquarters. In 1940, as the war took a dramatic turn, he crossed France on foot and narrowly escaped certain death when he was machine-gunned by fighter-bombers. This traumatic journey left a lasting mark on the artist, and color gradually began to invade his palette. He painted a bright red sky, offset by the presence of three large black Fates, as a tribute to the violence he had just experienced. His friend Georges Braque would later praise this intense search for light, calling it a "sense of black light." In 1937, André Marchand received the Paul Guillaume Prize for his work The Girl and the Paralytic, part of a monochrome series depicting hieratic figures, seemingly frozen in desert landscapes, in an atmosphere reminiscent of Giorgio de Chirico's metaphysical paintings. These works attracted attention and established Marchand's reputation. In 1941, he participated in the exhibition Twenty Young Painters of the French Tradition, organized in Paris by Jean Bazaine and the Bernheim-Jeune Gallery. This exhibition marked an important step in the recognition of his work.
At the end of the war, André Marchand settled permanently in Paris, where he was one of the founders of the Salon de Mai in 1945. In 1942, he participated in a solo exhibition at Louis Carré, and in 1944, the gallery owner Aimé Maeght offered him a studio in Vence, where he painted numerous works depicting nature and the Mediterranean landscape. In 1946, he became one of the first artists to exhibit at Aimé Maeght's gallery, where his Arlésiennes met with great success. Although his early works were marked by intense Mediterranean lighting, his artistic explorations evolved, and in 1946, he moved to Burgundy, where he began to paint denser and more intimate vegetation, exploring more subtle nuances of light and plant motifs.
Marchand is distinguished by his unique approach to painting: his formal research and quest for light led him to explore different styles over the years, ranging from pure figuration to abstraction. In the 1950s, he began experimenting with semi-abstract painting, particularly to depict the forces of nature, such as the Mistral wind in Provence or the movements of the sea. He also worked on a series of "silent lives"—still lifes in which he played with light, shadows, and geometric shapes. From the 1950s onward, his work achieved great international success, and André Marchand exhibited in numerous galleries around the world, from Europe to the United States, from Japan to Latin America. However, this growth did not lead him to media stardom. Indeed, Marchand was a solitary artist, preferring to devote himself entirely to his work without worrying about the demands of the art market. He refused to become a professor at the Beaux-Arts, declined the Legion of Honor, and refused to submit to the spirit of the times. He avoided contact with admirers and refused to give in to pressure from galleries.
In 1967, a trip to Mexico and Guatemala rekindled his taste for structured compositions in vibrant colors. However, it was in his later years that Marchand achieved lasting recognition. He developed a technique that he perfected in the mastery of watercolor, in which he is considered a master. The Respirations Marines, which he created between 1964 and 1972, represent the culmination of his work. These works are among his finest, in which the artist successfully captures the movements of the ocean with rare precision and emotion.
In addition to his artistic output, Marchand maintains an international network of collectors. Retrospective exhibitions of his work have been organized in the Netherlands and Belgium, and some of his works are featured in major museums, including the Musée d’Art Moderne in Paris, the Musée Estrine in Saint-Rémy-de-Provence, and the Musée d’Art Roger-Quilliot in Clermont-Ferrand. His work is also included in the collection of the Musée National d’Art Moderne and in numerous private collections around the world.
Despite his global success, Marchand’s complex personality and his refusal to be publicized gradually distanced him from the public eye. The artist lived in a form of voluntary isolation, burdened by personal hardships and social difficulties. In 1997, a few months before his death, he continued to work tirelessly, every day seeking to perfect his art, faithful to his principles and his aesthetic quest.
His quote, "A painter always paints the same picture, and on the day he dies, he feels as if he hasn't even begun," perfectly sums up the relentless quest of an artist who, over the years, has never stopped searching, questioning himself, and engaging in pictorial explorations that go beyond the limits of simple representation of the world.
Today, André Marchand's work is respected worldwide, and his paintings are among the most sought-after pieces by collectors and museums.
